Call it animal attraction, but humans aren’t the only ones set to fall in love with Brickworks Park!  Around 80 per cent of the project’s extensive landscaping will be native flora designed to encourage the return of local fauna to the former industrial site.

With sustainability at the core of everything we do, this is just one of the ways we will be showcasing the green credentials of Brickworks Park.

With heavy plantings of water gums, paperbarks and eucalypts as well as native fruit trees such as Quandong, this well-known location on Mina Parade will be once again hosting abundant birdlife and other animals as part of a thriving ecosystem.

Plants with a good amount of nectar provide a kickstart for the local ecosystem – stretching from frogs and insects to butterflies and small mammals.

Paperbarks, which often feature brightly coloured bottlebrush-like flowers, attract nectar feeding birds such as honeyeaters and lorikeets. Taller trees also provide a place for the birds to perch, including kookaburras, and their hollows offer vital nesting sites for many of our feathered friends.

Quandong is a native fruit tree that was once an important food source for indigenous Australians, who would eat them fresh or dried. One of Australia’s most versatile bush foods, its fruit has a yellow to red colour and a tart taste. Quandong is also known for its high vitamin content and the fruit is a natural food source for many bird species.

Take a walk on the wild side

While Brickworks Park will play its part in fostering the return of the region’s diverse wildlife, a permanent public artwork commissioned by Brisbane City Council project and called “The Beasts of Alderley’’  reminds us that our streets and yards are more than just homes to humans.

The suburban “wilderness trail’’, which comprises 12 illustrated panels placed in and around streets surrounding the Alderley shopping precinct, is a fascinating window into the world of the creatures large and small that share our urban spaces.

Like all good stories, it features elements of romance, conflict and perfect co-dependence – all within the overlooked realms of the animal kingdom.

From tiny microbes that live in the soil to larger species such as the sulphur-crested cockatoo, Alderley is home to broad range of wildlife.
