New bridge paves the way for greater accessibility in Alderley
Residents at Brickworks Park will have easier access to public transport thanks to a new $2.4 million bridge between Frederick Street and Mina Parade.
The Frederick Street Footbridge makes it safer and easier for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the railway line.
Complete with an entry ramp on Frederick Street for greater wheelchair access, the new footbridge is 15 metres long and features a stunning painted mural by local Brisbane artist Ash Taylor.
Combining native flora and fauna, the mural includes the blue-faced honeyeater bird, which is commonly found in the area.
Artist Ash Taylor said her work helps transform public spaces in the community.
“My work challenges an out of sight out of mind principle by bringing native flora and fauna to urbanised spaces,” she said.
“The wall features a blue-faced honeyeater and a honey gem grevillea, both of which can be found in the local area.”

The Frederick Street Footbridge replaces a road-over-rail bridge which was removed in 2020 and follows community advocacy in Alderley as locals called for greater accessibility.
Member for Stafford, Jimmy Sullivan thanked the local Alderley community for its advocacy. “This project is a win for active transport in Alderley and testament to the advocacy of the local community,” he said.
“While it was necessary to remove the former bridge after ongoing deterioration and safety issues that were identified by Queensland Rail engineers, the Alderley community was clear that a new pedestrian and cycling connection was needed.”

The bridge easily connects Brickworks Park residents to public transport and nearby Newmarket dog park, Newmarket pool and Sedgley Park.
