7 tips on how to maximise space
Whether you’re in the market to purchase your first apartment or simply looking to make the most out of your living space, there are plenty of ways to maximise space and enjoy spacious living. At Brickworks Park, we’ve made spaciousness and storage a priority in our townhomes and apartments, but for those wanting a few more ideas on how to best maximise space, here are seven tips to get you started.
1. Create a study nook
If you’re studying or working from home, chances are you’ll probably just need the essentials like a desk, chair and enough room for a computer, so for those looking for a quick fix, a study nook works wonders. Not only do you get a cosy corner, but you’ll also save on room. Take advantage of a space underneath stairs for a cosy, study nook or look towards our townhomes at Brickworks Park that feature a built-in study nook.
2. Utilise car park storage
Whether you have a car or not, it’s worth checking what’s offered in your car park storage and using this space as a place to store those larger items like tents, fishing gear or camping chairs. At Brickworks Park, we have carport options for either one or two cars, so using the extra room to store these items is a good way to both save space upstairs and declutter your cupboards.
If you don’t have a car or you’re looking to save on space, why not consider a bike? In fact, cycling in Queensland has risen dramatically over the years, the 2021 National Walking and Cycling Participation Survey, found the number of Queensland residents who ride bikes in a typical week, has increased significantly since 2019, from 13.5% to 19.2% in 2021. We all know how awkward bikes can be to stow away and at Brickworks Park, bike racks are built-in to the car park spaces, making it a breeze! Plus, you’ll be living just five kilometres from Brisbane CBD, so cycling instead of driving on your daily commute won’t be too strenuous of an effort.
3. Look towards lighter colours
Not only is the open plan living at Brickworks Park’s apartments and townhomes great for ventilation, but it also adds to the feeling of spaciousness.
If you’re looking to add this to your home, here’s an easy trick: opt for light colours and textures to add to this feeling of light, open space. In interior design, lighter colours or colours low in saturation, help our eyes see the light in a room better and it’s often used to make the space feel larger than it is.
Avoid using darker colours and textures where you can as they can narrow the space, unless you’re looking to make a room or space feel cosy, in which case, these colours are great for making a space feel smaller and intimate. If you’re a lover of the dark colour palette, stick to areas where you can use lots of light to bounce off these spaces like a bathroom or powder room.
At Brickworks Park, we use natural, light palettes to reflect the surrounds and add to the feeling of spaciousness in your home. These light textures, colours and shapes have been carefully curated so you can easily layer and balance with your own style, and who doesn’t love that!
4. Opt for underbed storage options
According to the 2021 Census, 1.3 million Aussies now live in apartments, so plenty of us know that storage in a smaller home can be tricky, however there are options!
If you’re a keen bookworm or your wardrobe needs a bit of a refresh each season, pack away bulky items like books, shoes or clothes when you’re not using them in underbed storage. There are plenty of options online and plastic-free alternatives that will help you save on space and keep your collections safe.
5. Turn to island benches
Sure, everyone knows a mirror can make a room look larger, but not many know that an island bench can also do the trick. An island bench can make a kitchen area look less “cut off” and contained, as the kitchen flows into the rest of the space, rather than a separate area. At Brickworks Park, we’ve not only added roomy pantries to our apartments and townhomes, but we also have added generous reconstituted stone islands in the kitchen, to make the most of the space and add a luxurious feel.
6. Look through glass cabinets
Glass cabinets give the illusion of a larger kitchen as the eye can see through them, rather than being a contained space. The trick here is of course, to make sure your cupboards are tidy! Some people love a ‘declutter’ and others cringe at the idea, but truth be told, having an organised cupboard space is a must for glass cabinets because you can literally see everything inside. Not only will they give the illusion of a wider kitchen, it also saves time looking for items – you can easily see where everything is and come the morning rush to work, you’ll be thanking yourself for it!
In our Brickworks Park homes, we’ve opted for fluted glass and panelled cabinet detailing. Not only does this maximise the space, but it also adds a contemporary look and feel on the typical Queensland kitchen. Plus, we’ve got plenty of built-in space in our kitchen benches, so you can add a lifestyle touch or utilise that extra bit of space.
7. Greener balconies
What about the balcony? If you love entertaining or sitting outside to enjoy your morning coffee, you want to enjoy your space.
Circular furniture like tables and chairs work wonders to make your space feel larger and they take up less room than large, blocky outdoor couches. A few outdoor plants can help the space not only feel warmer and more inviting, but also gives the eye something to focus on.
At Brickworks Park, our 1-bedroom apartments feature large, spacious balconies, and the living area flows nicely to the outdoor areas to accentuate the space. Our townhouses also feature large private yard spaces for those who’d rather have a backyard area and it’s perfect for those with pets.
We hope these seven tips and tricks help you maximise the space at your place and give you a few ideas of the best ways to make the most out of your living areas.
